US Postal Service plans to shred 'Books From Birth' books

Posted: Updated:

More than 34,000 local kids are enrolled in the Books From Birth Program.  It's even backed by Dolly Parton.

It gives free books once a month to children younger than 5 years old but now organizers say they need the US Postal Service to change a new policy that could hurt them.  The books are mailed to the kids but we're told about 1,300 of them are sent back to the post office because of un-deliverable addresses.

Until now post office employees have held the books and allowed Books From Birth volunteers to come and pick them up.  They can't hold them anymore and yesterday we were told the US Postal Service announced new plans to shred those books.

There's no word on when the shredding will start.  Books From Birth leaders have a petition going around to try and convince the post office to reverse its decision.

This story is blowing up our Facebook page.  Is it un-fair for post office employees to hold the books for pick-up, something they may not do for other groups, or is it worth it for the kids?

Here's what you're saying:

Priscilla says: "that is truly a senseless waste. There are hundreds of children that can use these books. Donate them to childcare programs in Memphis and Shelby County."

And Danisha adds: "they should donate them to schools, or at least ask the public if they would like the books. I am a single mother, and I would love to have those books.  I also work for m-c-s, and I know for sure that we could use them."
