NASCAR is investigating Saturday's crash at Daytona to see if any safety changes need to be made. More than 30 people were hurt when debris from Kyle Larson's car, including a tire, hit spectators in the stands.
The wreck involved a dozen cars.
Here in the valley, races are scheduled this weekend at Phoenix International Raceway. Fans we talked to aren't too worried about their safety along the track.
At Zoom Town Monday morning, fans were lined up waiting to unpack their RV's and start a weeklong NASCAR party.
Thousands of fans will be at the track in Avondale, watching NASCAR this weekend.
"We're just dumb enough to love this redneck racing stuff, we love everything about NASCAR," says Sean Meares.
"I just love the excitement, the crashes, the fighting it's just, I can't explain it ya know," says Donna McGrail.
Despite the frightening pictures from the Daytona 500 this weekend, fans we talked to say they will crowd the stands to watch the Subway Fit 500 starting Friday.
The cars at PIR will be hitting speeds of 150 miles per hour versus 200 and higher at other tracks -- so it's safer, reasons Sean Meares, who drove down from Payson with his family for the week.
"We don't get the speeds they get at Talladega and Daytona, they won't hardly let you stop and take pictures, they got the security guards herding you along," says Meares.
Fans are already flocking to the city of RVs that will house thousands before Race Day. They call it Zoom Town, and the risks that come with it are worth the thrill.
"I'm not worried about it here, but yeah it's dangerous every time you go to the race track you could get hurt," says Dennis McGrail.
"It is dangerous but they try and do their best at the track to keep people safe, you know, with the catch fences and stuff, but sometimes, it just happens," says Donna McGrail.
Phoenix International Raceway said they didn't have anyone available to talk about fan safety.
There is much to be done for the big race -- even more so because Danica Patrick will be here racing, and that always ups the interest.
