SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Negotiators for Gov. Susana Martinez and the Navajo Nation have agreed on key terms of a possible gambling compact that could allow the state's largest Indian tribe to operate five casinos and for New Mexico to collect a greater share of casino earnings.
The governor's negotiator Jessica Hernandez said Monday the goal is to submit a new compact to the Legislature for approval before lawmakers adjourn this month.
A Navajo Nation Council committee must endorse the proposals by negotiators before a final compact can be prepared and sent to the Legislature.
The Navajos operate two casinos under terms of a compact expiring in 2015. A new gambling agreement would extend until 2037 - the same date as 2007 compacts with nine New Mexico tribes.
