Two Dogs Shot Dead In Chester County

CHESTER SPRINGS, Pa. -

Two puppies were shot dead when they wandered out of their yard in Chester County, but police say it was not a crime.

Argus and Fiona were Bernese mountain dogs, which are bred to be gentle, herding animals. When they got past a hole in their backyard fence, they came across a property and were instantly drawn to its sheep.

Their instinct was to protect the sheep, but the property owner did not see it that way and shot both of the dogs dead.

Dog owner Mary Bock said her neighbor told her his reaction was to shoot first.

"He fired no warning, he didn't yell, he didn't make any phone calls, he didn't do anything," Bock said, adding that her five children are now afraid to go anywhere near the neighbor's property.

Bock said police told her she cannot file charges against the neighbor because, under Pennsylvania law, a homeowner is allowed to shoot animals that are pursuing his or her livestock.

Police were unavailable for comment, but the district attorney said he has received new information, so there may be new developments coming in this story.

We will keep you updated as new information become available.
