Suspected Gunman In Warminster Apartment Shootout Charged

Posted: Updated:

A light was on Wednesday night in Andrew Cairns apartment until a hand appeared, closed the window curtain and shut it off. Moments later a woman who identified herself as a close friend of the family entered the suspected gunman's apartment.

"It's a hard time for everybody. I'm sorry for this terrible trouble," the woman said.

Earlier in the day police brought 49-year old Cairns into District Court in Warminster Bucks County to face charges. They say he barricaded himself in his Jefferson On The Creek Apartment home then opened fire on police Tuesday night.

"I'm innocent," said Cairns as police took him into court. But police say it was Cairns who fired on six officers before officers returned fire. His 89-year old neighbor Marie Zienkewicz who lived below him was killed from the crossfire. Detectives are still trying to determine who fired that shot. They also say a bullet traveled almost a half mile across East Street Road and into a woman's house.

"All I know is I was sitting in my computer room when I heard this loud bang," said homeowner Deanna Gorman. The bullet entered her bedroom through a picture frame above the bed where she would've been sleeping later that night.

"There was the mirror all cracked up," she said. Gorman is lucky she wasn't hurt and so is Cairn's girlfriend who initially called police to say he was trying to shoot himself. She got out while the entire apartment complex was on lock down.

"I was turning the lights off and staying away from the windows," recalled resident Basil Milton.  And apartment neighbor Nick Alvino said, "I can't believe it even happened."

Cairns is being held on 10 million dollars bail. He's charged with attempted murder but police say more charges could come.
