Metro Transit Police are looking for the man who robbed a woman at gunpoint on a Metrobus. The victim was a passenger on the W6. Witnesses say a man with a black jacket and hoodie brandished a handgun, stole the woman's purse and fled.

Hours after that incident, Metro Transit Police teamed up with the Metropolitan Police Department and the Federal Protective Service for a H.I.T.E -- which stands for high intensity targeted enforcement effort. They focused on the Anacostia Station, along Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue to Alabama Avenue to the Congress Heights Metro Station.

"Really, this is to get the public to know we're here for them," says Metro Transit Police Lt. Nopadom McKee.

Metro does these H.I.T.Es more a dozen times a month at various stations, handing out safety tips, and raising awareness -- especially about electronic device thefts and other robberies which Brianna Jenifer sees all the time here.

"iPods, tennis shoes, phones, all of the above," Jenifer says.

The hope is this high visibility effort will make thieves think twice.

Robert Johnson thinks they are on the right track.

"Make a lot of people feel safer out here," he says.

"It's good, they need to be out here," says Wanda Johnson.

McKee says the Anacostia Station will be the focus of more of these efforts. The Homeland Security Headquarters opens up nearby this summer, and there will be dozens of federal workers passing through that station daily. They want to really squash crime now, Lt. McKee says.
