Shelby County Judge Higgs passes away suddenly

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Longtime Shelby County Criminal Court Judge Otis Higgs passed away suddenly on Friday, Mayor Mark Luttrell said via his Facebook account.

Judge Higgs, who was 75, was elected to Criminal Court, Division 2 in 1998. He ran for Memphis mayor several times but never won. He also served briefly as interim Shelby County Sheriff.

Judge Higgs was first elected to county criminal court Division II in 1998. He was re-elected to his current term, which would have ended in 2014.

Funeral arrangments for Judge Higgs were set over the weekend. Visitation will be Friday, Feb. 22, from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church. The funeral will follow at 3:30 p.m., also at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church.

Burial will take place Saturday, Feb. 23, at Calvary Cemetery at 10 a.m., 1663 Elvis Presley Blvd.
