Police ID Suspect, 2 Victims In Del. Courthouse Lobby Shooting

Posted: Updated:

Delaware State Police released Tuesday morning the names of the suspect and the two female victims involved in Monday morning's shooting at the New Castle County Courthouse.

State police identified Thomas S. Matusiewicz, 68, of Edcouch, Texas, as the gunman who opened fire in the courthouse lobby around 8:10 a.m.

Two capitol police officers were wounded, and the gunman was killed during a shootout with the cops.

In a news release, state police identified the victims as Christine Belford, 39, and Laura Mulford, 47, both of Newark, Del.

Neighbors say Belford, the suspect's former daughter-in-law and alleged target, lived in a constant state of fear at her home in Newark. She was in court to attend a custody hearing regarding the three children she has with ex-husband David Matusiewicz.

A law enforcement official initially named David Matusiewicz as the shooter Monday. His name appeared on the sign-in log for a child support hearing. But now that official says that David was not the gunman.

We've learned David Matusiewicz did prison time after kidnapping their kids a few years ago and taking them to Mexico and Central America.

Belford got her kids back and put in security systems to protect them.

Neighbors say Belford was a working mom and her kids are being cared for as this tragedy unfolds.

As soon as the calls came in, first-responders started talking to each other and piecing together just what happened inside that courthouse. Audio of those first-responders has been posted online by a company that monitors law enforcement radio traffic.

State police say homicide detectives are continuing their investigation by conducting interviews, reviewing video surveillance, and collecting evidence at the crime scene.

Further information and investigative details are expected to be released later on Tuesday, state police said.
