Police have arrested a Peoria man in the fatal stabbings of a married couple in their home near 67th Avenue and Peoria.
Police say officers arrived at the scene to respond to a stabbing call around 10:45 p.m. Sunday. There, they found the victims, 58-year-old Gwen O'Reilly and her husband 54-year-old Raymond O'Reilly.
There were six other people there when the stabbings happened -- the couple was having a get-together. Witness accounts and evidence led investigators to identify Benjamin Rodriguez as the suspect.
The O'Reilly's were transported to an area hospital where they were pronounced dead shortly after their arrival, and 27-year-old Rodriguez was taken into custody Monday morning.
Police say after the stabbing, Rodriguez fled the scene and they were able to track him down to the area of 112th Avenue and Turney. He had been one of the guests at the social gathering.
"We got a tip..letting us know that the suspect was staying at a relative's home," said Amanda Jacinto of the Peoria police. "We were able to make it to that home and there was nobody else inside except our suspect...after a very short struggle, we were able to get him into custody without further incident."
No officers were hurt during the struggle.
"At this point, it looks like he is just an acquaintance of the male and female," said Peoria Police Lt. Stephen Hadley. "We have had contact with him in the past..not anything of this nature, but we have had police contact."
Rodriguez is facing two counts of first degree murder. A motive for the killings is not known.
