Before Friday night's win over Golden State, the Memphis Grizzlies helped celebrate Marine Cpl. (ret.) Melvin Gatewood, who received a free home in a giveaway from a military support organization.
He learned he won the home from an announcement during the game.
Over 17,000 in attendance cheered.
Cpl. Gatewood is a Mississippi native who served in Iraq during the War on Terror and is a Purple Heart recipient. He suffered third degree burns after an explosive device struck a Humvee he was driving. He was medically discharged from service.
The Military Warriors Support Foundation awards mortgage-free homes to wounded heroes injured during combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Cpl. Gatewood and his wife will move into a restored three-bedroom home in Tennessee. The couple will also receive three years of family and financial mentoring.
The Grizzlies hosted the celebration to show their appreciation for military heroes.
The Military Warriors Support Foundation has provided nearly 300 free home giveaways. Foundation representatives say the home giveaways have been made possible by mostly corporate sponsors, like Red Bull, and Walmart.
