After performing below five percent in the state, Treadwell Elementary and Middle Schools are being turned into Innovation Zone – or iZone - Schools.
"They'll receive additional support additional teachers additional technology they'll be in school for an extra hour so every single thing that we need to do during the school day were going to maximize that instructional period," says Dr. Sharon Griffin, Interim Director of iZone Schools.
Treadwell Elementary and Middle Schools are two of 69 Memphis schools that performed in the bottom five percent in the state; 59 of those are elementary and middle schools.
"The school does have scores in the bottom 5% of the state and I'm excited about the school getting additional resources," says Parent Jennifer Shiberou, who has one child at Treadwell Elementary School.
The schools will receive extra state funding through School Improvement Grants (SIG), but it comes with some regulations. In some cases it may mean losing the current principal, but across the board it means gaining extra resources tailored to the school's needs.
"If the school was on the list or failing the bottom five percent because of literacy then a portion of those dollars will go toward additional literacy resources," says Griffin, "If it was math It was technology whatever it was the need of the school we would use those dollars to support those schools in those deficit areas."
As a part of being an iZone school, it means the schools will lose some programs and gain some programs. Treadwell parents at a community meeting about it Thursday night say they want to keep at least one program: The dual-language program. The program allows students who participate to learn their class work in both English and Spanish.
Shiberou's child is in the program, and she says, :It was only started a few years ago and the kids were in the program are doing a great job and parents have been promised that is the best program will actually continue all the way to high school."
