PHILADELPHIA -

Officials at the Philadelphia Zoo announced on Thursday that a 21-year-old African lion named "Merlin" has died.

Zoo officials say veterinarians made the decision to euthanize the lion after they confirmed a decline in his medical condition.

"We are very sad for his loss, Merlin has left quite a legacy," Tammy Schmidt, Curator of Carnivores and Ungulates, said in a statement. "Merlin received great care, feeding and veterinary attention during a long and healthy life here."

According to the zoo, Merlin exceeded the typical life span for his species.

Merlin, who was born at the Johannesburg Zoo in South Africa in 1991, arrived in Philadelphia in 1993 along with two other lions.

The zoo says Marlin remained among its most popular animals and was known to excite visitors with his "healthy roar."

Five other African lions currently call the Philadelphia Zoo home.
