Glendale Police make dent in notorious street gang

GLENDALE, Ariz. -

Police in Glendale say they've struck a blow against a street gang responsible for armed robberies, aggravated assaults and one murder.

At a news conference Wednesday afternoon, police announced that they've arrested dozens of people affiliated with the criminal group.

Glendale Police Chief Debora Black say nearly 60 people affiliated with the Grandel gang have been taken into custody so far in the year-long investigation and other arrests are expected.

9 of these arrests occurred Wednesday while others happened months earlier in the case.

"They started their own clique called Grandel for protection in the prison system. What that morphed into over the years was a criminal street gang," said Rick Saint-John, Assistant Chief of Glendale Police.

Police say their investigation of the gang began when they examined a February 2010 stabbing death in which a gang member was later convicted of killing Mark Miner.

Investigators say the majority of the gang's victims were fellow criminals.

"The majority of the crime that was committed was against people that were doing things in the streets of Glendale that Grandel didn't approve of," said Saint-John.

"Because of these efforts we dealt a serious blow to an established street gang. By taking these individuals out of our community, we struck a blow for justice and made our streets safer for law abiding residents," said Scott Brown, Homeland Security Deputy Special Agent.
