Bucks Co. License Plate Readers Aim To Increase Public Safety

Police departments in Bucks County are moving into the future of law enforcement with the arrival of high-tech license plate readers.
Due to the effort of a five-county Southeast Pennsylvania Regional Task Force and funding from the Department of Homeland Security, 38 automatic license plate readers and computer servers were purchased, law enforcement officials announced Wednesday.
Now, police in Bucks, as well as Montgomery, Chester, Delaware and Philadelphia counties will be able to read the license tags of passing vehicles with the new technology.
Police said these automated license plate readers will play a critical role in police officer safety by helping them to quickly identify suspects, wanted, or stolen vehicles and vehicles associated with an Amber Alert.
The technology will also aid in the search for missing persons and wanted fugitives.
On Wednesday, eight Bucks County departments received classroom and field training with the readers at the Lower Makefield Police Department.
Police said it is the hope of this initiative to increase public safety and reduce security threats by sharing information across jurisdictions.
