Woodward Academy girls walk for a cure

ATLANTA -

The fight for breast cancer awareness is getting help from a younger audience. Susan G. Komen will have scores of young women alongside them during their three day event in October.

Three Woodward Academy girls will be participating, and are training to get ready for the event.

"You just build up. You do one mile one day, two miles the next day and eventually you're doing 20 miles," said 11th grader Annie Stewart.

The Woodward Academy 11th graders will be walking in Susan G. Komen's 3-Day Walk. A new program just for young women allows them to walk 20 miles in one day to raise about $750 for breast cancer awareness. The three friends signed up, and came up with the team name: Teens for Tatas.

"Well, Annie actually came up with it," said 11th grader Lauren Kimbrough.

Anna Bowden, who is also participating in the walk, says it will be a lot of fun. She's looking forward to spending time with her friends and raise awareness about breast cancer.

Kimbrough lost many family members to breast cancer, including her Aunt Eula.

"When I was young, I didn't understand it all until I grew up, and it's hard," said Kimbrough.

The girls say the decision to get involved was easy. They say their goal is not only to raise money but get other girls their age walking and caring about finding a cure.

"We're hoping that they'll join us and sign up and learn about the cause and raise awareness and help raise money so we can find a cure," said Kimbrough.

Registration is open for Susan G. Komen's 3-Day Walk and the young women walking program. To sign a team up, or more information on how you can help the girls' team, click here!
