WAYNESBORO, Ga. (AP) - A Georgia man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for killing two people with a car that he was drag racing in 2011.
The Augusta Chronicle reports that 40-year-old Michael D. Mathis was sentenced Friday by a Superior Court judge in Burke County. He had pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicular homicide.
Authorities say Mathis was drag racing in a residential area in November 2011 when he lost control of his car and plowed into two people who were either watching the race or walking along the road. The collision killed both 15-year-old KeShon Burdette and 27-year-old Kevin Johnson.
A second racer, Torrance Crumbley, has pleaded not guilty to vehicular homicide charges.
