Scottsdale PD get proactive with drunk drivers

Posted: Updated:

It's one of the biggest events of the year here in the valley. More than half-a-million people are expected to attend the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

But it's more than just a golf tournament. There's also a party well after the final putt has dropped.

With the good times comes the danger that someone will have too much to drink up at the Bird's Nest -- and decide to get behind the wheel.

So Scottsdale Police are doing their part to make sure that doesn't happen by stopping people before they hit the parking lot. They set up a mobile command center out at the Phoenix Open.

Early Friday, police gave tournament attendees a chance to blow into a breathalyzer and see if they should get behind the wheel. They want drivers to make the right decision and call for a taxi or responsible driver.

"I believe it does [make a difference] because you see these people out to the valet stands and out to their cars, if one of two them think instead of driving home I'm gonna take a cab after I just talked to those officers, puts things in perspective for them," said Scottsdale Police Sgt. Tom Jensen.

Police will be out there all weekend.

FOX 10's Kelly Hessedal went on a ridealong with officers. She reports from the mobile command center in Scottsdale.
