Roland offers residency rule compromise

Posted: Updated:
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

The Shelby County residency rule is turning into a big headache for the new Unified Schools system.

There are roughly 1,500 Memphis City Schools employees who will start working for the county when the merger is complete who live outside of Shelby County.

But county rules say all county employees have to live in the county. The idea of grandfathering in these employees has been bounced around, but it isn't popular.

FOX13 News has found out that it would take a referendum to abolish the residency requirement.

County Commissioner Terry Roland, though, has come up with a resolution  to compromise. He will submit the resolution to amend the charter the first week of February.
