First time rider Quantral Fletcher was thrilled, "I felt like I was on a wind horse. The wind was to my back and it looked so peaceful."
It's an experience one might not expect to have in the middle of a major city, an up close look at beautiful scenery by horseback. It's a magical ride that can become a reality at Shelby Farms in Memphis.
"It's hard to believe when you're out on the trails, you're right here in the heart of Memphis," says J.B. Farrell with Shelby Farms Stables.
After lots of drilling, measuring, cutting, and remodeling, Farrell and his business partner, Jim Hall, re-opened the stables Friday. Anyone over the age of 8 can come ride one of the stable's horses for $25.
"I just want something the city can be proud of," adds Farrell.
He says their hour-long trail rides are geared toward beginners, "We'll get you up on the horse and show you how to do everything. We make it easy."
Chris Dykstra, who's visiting from Chicago, saddled up with Quantral Fletcher of Memphis. Both men are first-time-riders, but say they felt "at-ease" thanks to their trail-guide and experienced horses.
"He really showed us how to handle the horses and it was awesome!" exclaims Fletcher.
Dykstra remarks, "At first I didn't really know what I was doing but as I went along, the horse just kind of took me down the trail and we had a lot of fun."
It's an opportunity Farrell and Hall hope more people will take advantage of, a chance to take a break from the city and enjoy nature.
"When you get on a horse, walking through a woods, it's like Heaven," says Hall.
