Authorities Investigating North Philly Explosion

Posted: Updated:

Authorities investigated an explosion tonight that they are describing as a "thermal explosion" that delayed transit commuters tonight.

Initial reports were that the incident was a transformer that exploded near 31st Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue near railroad tracks that service Amtrak and SEPTA regional rail lines.

Commuter rail service was temporarily delayed this evening to check the structural integrity of the bridge, service has since resumed shortly after.

The thermal explosion was caused by ice accumulating on the wires above the train tracks, which caused something similar to a massive spark.

Chunks of concrete were thrown from the bridge and initially seemed suspicious at the time. Multiple agencies, including the FBI and Philadelphia Police.

Four people were transported to local hospitals for evaluation, one of which had minor injuries.
