Political winds drive record gun sales

Posted: Updated:
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -

As the debate over gun control wages on in America, sporting goods stores are selling out of supplies and gun shows are popping up all over the place. This weekend there are two big gun shows in the Mid-South.

There is another sound being heard nationwide and that is the sound of cash registers ringing up sales for every kind of gun that exists. It all has to do with another sound coming out of Washington, the sound of some politicians calling for gun control and one is driving the other like never before.

Jay Hill owns Classic Arms Gun Shop in Cordova and he has never seen anything like it. He says he expected his business to double when the gun control talk started up in Washington, but it has quadrupled and he sees no end in sight. He is not surprised there are two gun shows set for this weekend in the Memphis area and he says they will pack them in.

"There will be lines, long. Get there early because this is going to an hour wait to get in. Those lines will be that long," says Hill.

Hill says he is getting in guns and ammo every day, but much of what is coming in has already been sold. Even so, Hill says he is not selling the guns and ammo for as much as he could.

Weapons at the gun shows are going for record prices. A gun that Classic Arms sells for about $1,500 could go for as much as $2,000 or more.
