(WJBK) -- Move over Yorkshire Terrier. The German Shepherd knocked the petite pooch down the list and took Detroit's top spot in the American Kennel Club's 2012 ranking of the most popular dog breeds in the U.S.
"Motor City loves large breeds" said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson. "The German Shepherd Dog, Rottweiler, and Labrador Retriever all went up the list in 2012, while the Yorkshire Terrier and Shih Tzu dropped down." Detroit's top 5 breeds for 2012 (2011 ranking in parentheses): 1. German Shepherd (2) 2. Rottweiler (3) 3. Labrador Retriever (4) 4. Yorkshire Terrier (1) 5. Bulldogs (NR)
In nationwide rankings, the lab takes the top spot, followed by the German Shepherd; Golden Retrievers; Beagle; and Bulldog.
