Posted: Updated:
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

It was the crime that begged the question: are any of our neighborhoods safe from gun violence?

That came after a 21-year-old was shot to death outside a home where a birthday party had just taken place.

Police say two, maybe three gunmen have been on the run since June of 2011. They fired into a parked car injuring two people and killing Imri Gilmore, Who had dreams of going to college.

Mr. Gilmore bled to death after suffering a gunshot wound to the leg.

"We tried to keep him talking, telling him everything was going to be all right," recalled Michelle Foster, neighbor. "They said it was an injury to him femur artery."

Police say Mr. Gilmore and two friends where sitting in a Toyota Camry waiting to take friends to the movies when a white SUV drove by with its headlights off.

Two men got out of the SUV and came toward the car.

"They said the people were dressed in all black with ski masks," said one witness in June 2011.

"We know they were approached on either side of the window," said Shelby County Sheriff Lt. Kevin Helms. "They were told to give it up and at that time shots were fired."

Imri was Brenda Gilmore's only child. She and her husband adopted Imri when was he was a baby.

"I was the only mother that had to plan a funeral," she recalled. "All three of the young men I understand were shot, but my son was the only one that died. I was wanting to be a mother. We desired children my husband and I.  When he came along, my husband, I, my whole family we poured love on him."

Police believe the suspects had targeted the community in southeast Memphis before.

"Somebody knows who was in that vehicle," Lt.  Helms said. "I think that somebody knows it wasn't suppose to be a killing. We are going to kill somebody. It went wrong. Something was said."

A crime that left a neighborhood in pain.

"This stuff doesn't happen over here," said one witness to the crime. "These guys are over here all the time.  They come from good homes. They don't cause trouble for anybody."

A killing that stole a mother's love.

"I would love for some to speak up because I need closure to this," Brenda said. "I hate to think about my son just murdered in the street and no one would say anything."

Police believe the gunmen may have shot Imri and the others, believing they may have had weapon. But they were unarmed.

Ms. Gilmore told FOX13 News that hoping a reward will entice someone to call police, if doing the right thing ... isn't enough to make someone come forward.
