WOODHAVEN, Mich. (WJBK) -- Army Specialist Matthew Smith, home from his second tour of duty in Afghanistan, made a visit to Erving Elementary in Woodhaven Tuesday to surprise his nephews that he hasn't seen in almost a year.
"It's just a great day seeing these little guys. I talk to them on Skype and on the phone, and just missing part of their lives, watching them grow and everything, it's hard, but coming home and seeing these guys for the first time, it's a great feeling," said Smith.
But perhaps the happiest person at the school on Tuesday was Smith's mother, who set up the surprise visit for her grandsons at school.
"I'm very proud of my son and just thank God he [came] home safe and everyone in his unit," said Laurel Smith. "It was awesome to see that Saturday, the buses rolling in, and all of them are reunited with their families again."
