Nearly everyone you ask has a different story to tell about the Church Health Center. That's because no matter where you look, you'll see something different and it makes a huge impression on those who walk through the door.
"I was going to the doctor's office and said I had a lot of stress," Brenda Ellis said. "Can you recommend someplace and give me someplace where I can lose weight, work out still have stress relief and she said come here. I never knew, when you think Church Wellness Center you think, you know church center but when I came in I went, ‘this place is huge.'"
It is the same story for staff members. Carissa Algea was a college student in Ohio when she came across an internship opportunity and thought it might be a fun summer in Memphis. It turned out to be a real game changer for her.
"What I didn't realize was my life was about to change because I was thinking I wanted to be a physical therapist and I was preparing to do the whole thing and then here just meeting the staff, and meeting the members here changed my while perspective. I decided to change my career focus and go into preventative rather than rehab," says Algea.
Eighty-one-year-old Jean Hamilton has been a member here almost from the beginning. Like so many of these members, she used to walk in her neighborhood but was concerned about the safety factor. Then, she heard about the Wellness Center.
"I was really shocked I had seen a treadmill or two, but nothing like the rest of the equipment here," Hamilton said. "State of the art, this is state of the art. I mean you can play badminton, aerobics, walk, run and anything you want to do, something for everybody here."
Before you can take advantage of all the Church Health Center and Wellness Center have to offer you have to take that first step and walk in the building. Money is no excuse. You can have a membership for as low as $15 a month.
Transportation is no excuse. They will come pick you up and take you home again. But you have to take that first step and it really begins by getting up off the couch.
