PHOENIX (AP) - An Andean bear at the Phoenix Zoo has given birth to a cub.
The zoo says a 17-year-old bear named Rio delivered the cub on Jan. 3.
The mother bear and cub appear to be doing well and are in a maternity den where they can bond in a quiet environment.
The South American species has a high mortality rate.
Rio had given birth to three cubs in the past, but those cubs died within about a week.
The newborn cub hasn't yet been named.
Its sex hasn't yet been determined because only one person at the zoo has actually seen the cub.
