60 years later, Salted Nut Roll complaint ends in sweet surprise

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KMSP) -

One St. Cloud man with a sweet tooth has certainly proved that persistence pays off -- even if it takes 60 years.

Six decades after writing a letter to St. Paul's Pearson's Candy Company to complain about a defective piece of candy, Dave Bell is finally tasting victory.

At 74-years-old, Bell admits the story sounds a little nutty -- but he still goes a little nuts for Salted Nut Rolls, which have been his favorite candy since childhood.

Over half a century ago when he was just 14 years old, Bell bought one of his favorite candy bars and quickly bit into something he didn't' expect.

"I intended to eat it like I did all the other ones -- very fast, before anyone else could get a hold of it," Bell recalled. "All of a sudden, I felt something in my mouth that was out of the ordinary."

He pulled it out, wrote a letter and sent the foreign object to the company. The company replied in a letter -- but Bell says that's all that came.

"We are alarmed over your letter," Bell read. "We are reasonably sure the above mentioned is a twig from our peanut vine."

Yet, Bell wasn't satisfied.

"The reason I sent them that was to get a candy bar," he explained. "After 60 years, didn't think I would get one anymore."

Recently however, he stumbled on the letter while moving and decided to give it a second shot -- this time through e-mail, a technology he didn't have 60 years ago. That got the gears turning.

A few days ago, Bell got his wish when the company sent him several candy bars -- including a Salted Nut Roll.

"It's good business to keep people like me happy, even if it takes 60 years," Bell quipped.

But Bell wasn't exactly keen to share his long-awaited treat.

"If I give one of them away, there aren't many left -- so no, I don't want to share," he said.

Pearson's learned of Bell's hoarding and then decided to make the deal a little sweeter by sending a box with FOX 9's Scott Wasserman so he would have plenty to go around.

"I'm sorry it didn't get taken care of 60 plus years ago," said Pearson's CEO Michael Keller. "I'm just glad I can, and we can, take care of it now. We have a few Salted Nut Rolls to spare, so to take care of Dave Bell this way is a lot of fun."

Pearson's also sent one 5-pound Salted Nut Roll just for Bell.

"Wow," Pearson said. "Pearson's forever! They sure know how to do things -- it took them a long time to learn, though."
