Guns and ammunition are missing from the stockpile in Fulton County, but authorities don't suspect a break-in. FOX 5 has learned that investigators believe sheriff's personnel took the weapons, and the estimates on how much is missing are alarming.
Authorities don't know exactly how many guns are missing, but there are estimates the number ranges from a handful to more than 100. That's significant enough for the sheriff to call the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in on the case.
Fulton County Commissioner Rob Pitts wants answers after hearing the estimates the sheriff is trying to track. Whether it a police department or sheriff's department, only supervisors are supposed to set policy and practice on how weapons should be handled. If guns turned up missing, Commissioner Pitts wants to know why.
"Particularly in today's climate, what would anyone want with that many weapons? It's just bizarre. That's probably not a strong enough word to describe this situation," said Pitts.
A spokesman says the sheriff will not discuss the case while the investigation is ongoing, except to say that the missing weapons are weapons that were supposed to be destroyed.
The GBI declined to comment, which is standard practice when another agency calls them in to investigate.
