A woman who crashed into a broken down vehicle that was stopped on the I-17 has been booked into jail.
Angelica Maria Moreno is suspected of being impaired by drugs at the time of the crash, and is facing several felony charges.
On the evening on January 15, Moreno was allegedly driving a white pickup truck south on I-17 near Pinnacle Peak Road when she hit a passenger car that was broken down in the HOV lane.
DPS says that Moreno and her passenger, Joe Valenzuela, immediately ran from the scene on foot.
"Witnesses to the crash actually chased after them while staying on 911 with us," said DPS officer Carrick Cook.
They were soon apprehended in a nearby residential complex.
The driver of the broken down vehicle, Maria Hurtado-Rodriguez, was standing in front of her vehicle when the collision occurred. She suffered critical injuries to her upper body due to the chain reaction impact.
Rodriguez is expected to survive, but is facing a long recovery.
Moreno was booked on charges of fleeing the scene of a crash, possession of drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia. Additional charges are pending, awaiting results of a blood test.
Moreno and her passenger suffered only minor injuries in the collision.
