DETROIT (WJBK) -- A bitter cold snap continues to grip Michigan, forcing school closures and prompting warming centers to extend hours for those most at risk.

Weather Authority Ben Bailey says temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees are expected Wednesday in the Detroit area. Detroit's low temperature Tuesday was 1 degree.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory for several counties in Michigan, including Genesee, Lapeer, Sanilac and St. Clair counties locally from 7:00 p.m. tonight until 9:00 a.m. Wednesday.

Two warming centers in Detroit extended their hours Tuesday to accommodate rising demand, while sheriff's deputies patrol in search of homeless people in danger of freezing.

Overnight lows will dip to 10 degrees.

Meanwhile, a shelter for the homeless in Traverse City says a record number of people took refuge there because of bitter cold. Operators say 66 people showed up at Central United Methodist on Monday night, breaking the previous high of 57.
