Georgia Dome getting set for NFC Championship

Posted: Updated:

The Georgia Dome is preparing for the biggest Atlanta Falcons home game in history. The Falcons take on the San Francisco 49ers for the NFC Championship and a spot in the Super Bowl on Sunday.

Workers spent part of Thursday spray-painting and pulling up stencils to reveal the Dirty Bird's logo on the playing field.

"There's only two NFL games this weekend, and we're hosting one of them. And I think if you ask any of the other stadiums, they'd love to be in our shoes and hosting that game this weekend," said Georgia Dome spokesman Jason Kirksey.

Kirksey says that while Atlanta has hosted some pretty big games before, including a Super Bowl in 2000, this will be the biggest game yet for the Falcons.

"This is the biggest game we've ever hosted with the Atlanta Falcons involved. We've had the divisional game. They've taken the next step, and now we're excited to host the NFC Championship," Kirksey said.

The Falcons played for and won the NFC Championship back in 1998, but this is the first time they'll have the home field advantage.

"The one difference you'll see for this game is the NFC Championship. For the first time ever, we're painting that logo on the field," Kirksey said.

When the Falcons take on the 49ers for the first time in two years, the Georgia Dome will be filled with more than 70,000 screaming fans cheering them on for a shot at the Super Bowl.

"We're used to hosting major events here. Having 70,000 people here is something we always enjoy. But for the first time we've be able to have a Super Bowl berth on the line," said Kirksey.

If you can't make it the Dome, you can watch the big game on FOX 5 on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
