DETROIT (WJBK) -- Legendary racer Carrol Shelby is gone, but his vision lives on. His company is taking a walk on the "wide side" with two new street legal hot rods.
Who doesn't need a Shelby GT 500 Super Snake Wide Body with 850 horsepower?
"700 horsepower's plenty for me," said Greg Rygiel of Dearborn Heights.
He doesn't need the 850?
"I do not because I drive it on the street," Rygiel explained. "I've had enough tickets already. I've had two."
He drives a Shelby Mustang. His wife has one, too. He was all ears as Shelby American President John Luft reminded everyone how Carrol Shelby also hot-rodded Dodge econoboxes in the eighties.
"'You know, I caught more [expletive] for building those four cylinders back in the eighties,' he said, 'but I didn't care because I had the most fun.'"
With that, they unveiled a Ford Focus given the Shelby treatment. It's one example of a trend the late, great racer wanted to ahead of -- small engine, big performance.
"High performance, small footprint, turbo-charged four cylinder, 40 miles a gallon -- that market will never go away, and when you add the cachet of Shelby, it's just icing on the cake," Luft said.
Rygiel's wife now wants a Shelby Focus, too.
"She said she wants that as her daily driver every day," he said. "She wants that to drive in the wintertime."
If you want to check out the Super Snake and the Shelby Focus, the display is downstairs below the main floor at Cobo.
As for what's next...
"In New York, we are going to pull the silk back on something that's big," said Luft.
