LAKE CORMORANT, Miss. (FOX13) -
A Coast Guard spokesperson confirms to FOX13 News they have a crew searching for a man who reportedly fell overboard from a towboat in Mississippi River in DeSoto County, Miss.
The 60-year-old man fell over into the Mississippi River some 15 miles south of the I-55 Bridge near Bass Landing Road in the town of Lake Cormorant.
County first responders are assisting in the search and rescue effort.
DeSoto County emergency crews received a call from the Coast Guard in Memphis at around 7 p.m. to meet them at Bass Landing with a boat to help them search for the man who fell overboard.
Emergency crews said the man fell into the river at river mile 714 in the area of Pinckney. Rescuers believe the man was wearing a life vest and possibly floated 3.5 miles downriver onto Cat Island.
There is cause for concern, according to rescuers, because river temperature is 39-degrees and the part of the river they are searching is between 80- and 90-feet deep.
The Mississippi River southerly flow is coursing between 9-10 mph.
