Prescott Police have arrested a couple for abusing their 4-year-old adoptive daughter.
Tuesday, a school faculty member called police to report bruises and scratches on a 4-year-old student.
The child had a round bruise on her cheek and scratches on her neck, face, and ears, police say. The bruising on her cheek was so deep it could be seen inside her mouth.
After a medical evaluation, it was found the child had bruises all over her body, some of them older than the others.
The adoptive parents, 60-year-old Jerome Mitchell and his wife 59-year-old Hermina Ibarra, were interviewed. They both denied seeing any unusual bruises or doing anything to her.
Investigators say they showed very little concern for the 4-year-old and blamed her injuries on normal childhood mishaps.
Mitchell and Ibarra were booked into the Yavapai County Jail for felony child abuse. Ibarra is also facing a count of sexual abuse, as evidence of that was found.
The 4-year-old girl and her 2-year-old brother were turned over to Child Protective Services.
