SUV crashes into Chevy dealership's showroom

Posted: Updated:

It has been a brutally cold stretch of days. One driver had to deal with icy roads in central Phoenix early Tuesday morning -- and the results were pretty damaging.

No one had any warning before the rogue Trailblazer barreled onto the Courtesy Chevrolet dealership off Camelback and 12th Street in Phoenix. The driver of the SUV had trekked across some unexpected ice.

"Slid on the ice on Camelback and slid into our showroom," says Mark Gruwell, co-owner of Courtesy Chevrolet.

Mark Gruwell says the ice on the street developed after a water pipe burst on Sunday evening due to the freeze.

"There was a slow leak all day yesterday and we let the city know there was a leak," says Gruwell.

The water, combined with the freezing temperatures, created black ice. A term we hardly ever hear in the valley. It means ice you cannot see.

The driver hit the ice and lost control, charging into the dealership parking lot.

He hit a $73,000 Corvette and a $38,000 Camaro before slamming into the showroom. Gruwell can deal with the damages, but people, he says, cannot be replaced.

"Could have been a lot worse. We had an employee sitting at the desk where the car went through the showroom. Luckily he was not injured as well."

But there were other close calls. One employee had to dodge the car.

"He jumped out of the way thank God."

A customer was not so lucky. He was transported to the hospital.

Phoenix police say the driver of the Trailblazer was speeding when he caught the ice.

"It's just unfortunate, that we have the act of Mother Nature and we have to deal with the conditions."

The city which fixes pipes in order of importance has not yet gotten to this one. An hour after the crash, they were out there putting dirt on the ice
