The man accused in connection with a hoax on an airplane at Philadelphia International Airport in September pleaded guilty in federal court Monday.
According to the United States Attorney's Office, 26-year-old Kenneth W. Smith, Jr. was charged with and pleaded guilty to malicious false information about an explosive and false information and hoaxes.
Smith is accused of placing a phone call on September 6th to Philadelphia International Airport Police and reporting that someone had allegedly carried an explosive substance onto a plane scheduled to depart for Dallas-Ft. Worth Airport.
Investigators say Smith knew the information he provided to police was false.
The flight had to return to Philadelphia International Airport as a result of the phone call.
The U.S. Attorney's Office says Smith admitted that he wanted to target an individual in order to "avenge" a woman when placing the phone call.
Smith faces up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $500,000.
