'No Burn Day' order continues throughout chilly weekend

PHOENIX -

The cold temps may have you thinking of lighting up a wood fire in the fireplace or in a fire pit. But do that and you may be cited. It's a no burn day.

With weather like this, who wouldn't want to cozy up in front of a fire, but the no burn day will actually last throughout the weekend.

We ran into a lot of people who thought they were going to enjoy the weekend in front of their fireplace and were pretty disappointed.

"We have been slammed all week, it's been just crazy," says Gary Jordan of Paul Bunyan's Firewood.

At Paul Bunyan's Firewood, business is booming.

"Normally in January it's starting to slow down quite a bit but this January has been unbelievable."

Crowds of customers shopping for firewood are stocking up, anticipating the freezing temperatures this weekend.

But unfortunately Maricopa County has issued a high pollution advisory through the weekend. That means you're not allowed to burn wood in your fireplace or wood stove.

"The freezing cold weather coupled with stagnant air causes high pollution approaching the health standards," says Bob Huhn, Maricopa County Air Quality Department.

Bob Huhn says inspectors will be out in the county. Violators can face penalties ranging from a warning up to a $250 fine.

"We understand how nice and cozy a fire is, but you have to look at the bigger picture, look at the public health what it's doing to neighbors, children with asthma, elderly folks who have lung issues."

Meanwhile back at Paul Bunyan's Firewood, some customers are disappointed. Some admit they may bend the rules and take their chances.

The county does encourage folks to call the air quality department if they notice their neighbors violating the no burn day.

Residential fines can be up to $250, commercial fines are up to $10,000.
