A prayer service was held on Thursday to remember four children who died after their Conyers home went up in flames.
Community members packed Macedonia Baptist Church on Thursday to pray for the Glass family. The blaze, which occurred late Tuesday night, claimed the lives of 8-month-old Deon Glass, 3-year-old Armoni Roberts, 7-year-old Dar'Shawn Glass and 9-year-old Ah'Dariya Glass. Their mother, Reba Glass, is still hospitalized at Grady Memorial Hospital with burns to over 40 percent of her body. She was able to save her 6-year-old son Darnell by tossing him out of an upstairs window.
"They had a bittersweet reunion yesterday because to be able to hold one and not the others has to be a mother's greatest pain," said Macedonia Pastor Billie Cox.
Cox met with Reba Glass on Thursday as she battles her injuries and mourns the loss of her children.
"Today and during the night, the real pain from the wounds themselves set in, so now it's a wrestle with the emotional pain as well as their actual physical pain," Cox said.
Each person who came here to celebrate the lives of the young children and pray for their surviving family came for a reason.
Dar-Shawn's teacher, Lisa Campbell, said that she's been trying to comfort a classroom of first graders while fighting tears of her own.
"Since Sunday is his birthday, we're going to have a birthday party for him….and we're going to have a classroom release of balloons to celebrate his life," said Campbell.
The cause of the fire has not been determined, but Rockdale fire officials said that it started in the bathroom and hallway area on the second story of the duplex. There weren't any working smoke detectors in the home, according to investigators.
A Facebook page has been set up for the Glass family, and donations for the family are being accepted under the "Glass Family Memorial Fund " at Wells Fargo Bank.
According to a post on the Facebook page, a memorial service for the Glass family will be held at the Springfield Baptist Church in Conyers. No time was given for the service.
