Former Tiger scores in restaurant business

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Former University of Memphis basketball star Marcus Moody is succeeding off the basketball court, and he's hoping his new business can help create jobs for other Memphians.

Moody is known to Memphis Tiger fans for his ability to shoot 3-pointers.  He finished his career with the Tigers ranked 19th in scoring and still owns the freshman single-game scoring record with 41 points in a win over Oklahoma.

Moody's childhood dream was to become a Memphis Tiger.. It's a dream that became a reality in 1997 after graduating from Overton High School.

Now, he's fulfilling another longtime dream, opening a restaurant.  It's something he began thinking about during his time with the Tigers.

"That's exactly what I put down in the media guide. They had asked what I wanted to do in the next ten years and I said I wanted to own a restaurant," recalls Moody.

He's has teamed with his cousin Wayne and three other friends to open "4Kings Gourmet Burgers and Wings" at Winchester and Kirby.

With the help of a chef, 4Kings developed a menu that not only offers gourmet burgers and wings, but a variety of other items, including dessert.

"One of my favorites is the chicken tacos.  We have some shrimp tacos, chicken on a stick.  It's a good variety," explains Wayne.

4Kings customer Dinah McNeil says, "Everybody loves the wings and I got referrals on the Philly cheese steak from the people next door.  I came to try it and love it."

While satisfied customers help business, good food isn't the only thing Marcus and his business partners are hoping to bring to Memphis.

"It's been a dream of ours, wanting to create jobs for people around us," says Marcus.

So, just like those years with the Memphis Tigers, Marcus Moody is looking out for the team and this dream can provide an assist to his fellow-Memphians.

Marcus says you never know who you'll see in 4Kings. Penny Hardaway and several other former Tigers, as well as Grizzlies players Zach Randolph and Tony Allen come in to eat.

University of Memphis students and faculty get 10-percent off with a university ID card.

They're open Monday- through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
