YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -- Violent flames ripped through an apartment building in Ypsilanti Township on Monday.  Six different departments battled the fire from the air and the ground, but the building in the Schooner Cove complex was destroyed.

"It looks like a total loss.  Roof's collapsed on it," said Ypsilanti Township Fire Chief Eric Copeland.

The roof caved in, buckling under the intense heat.  All twelve units in the building are uninhabitable.  Those families are now seeking refuge with the Red Cross and each other.

Neighbor said they were told a grease fire ignited the flames, but officials won't confirm a cause until their investigation is complete.

Nobody was hurt, but several animals were trapped.  Once it was safe, fire crews went door to door.

"There was some confusion as to accounting for everyone.  What we ended up doing was securing the keys from the management and actually did an apartment by apartment search and retrieved, I think, a couple cats and dogs out," Copeland said.

Fire crews had to tear into the ceilings of nearby buildings to make sure the flames hadn't jump into the attic space and spread.
