Delaware Guard Unit Heading to Afghanistan

Posted: Updated:

NEW CASTLE, Del. (AP) - A National Guard unit from Delaware is set to deploy to Afghanistan to train national security forces there.

Gov. Jack Markell and Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, were scheduled to be on hand for Thursday's send-off of the Delaware Army National Guard 153rd Military Police Company.

More than 120 members of the unit, headquartered in Delaware City, are leaving from a 12-month tour of duty in Afghanistan.

After Thursday's departure ceremony in New Castle, they will report for several weeks of training in New Jersey before going overseas.

Once in theater, they will relieve Montana's 44th Military Police Company. Their primary mission will be to assist and train Afghanis in security operations. Typical training will include setting up roadside checkpoints, securing building projects and conducting walking patrols.
