HOWELL, Mich. (WJBK) -- 43-year-old Raulie Casteel, the suspected I-96 shooter, is now charged with terrorism. He is accused of shooting at 24 people, mostly drivers, injuring one.
Casteel pled not guilty to the charge when he was arraigned on Thursday.
The crimes spanned four counties. The attorney general is handling the cases that happened in Ingham, Livingston and Shiawassee counties. Oakland County is prosecuting its cases separately.
If Casteel is convicted of terrorism, he could spend the rest of his life in prison. It's a charge that's rarely used.
Major Joel Maatman with the Ingham County Sherrif's Office worked on the task force that captured Casteel. He said he saw the terror firsthand.
"This case put a lot of people on edge throughout the state. I mean, when it was happening we were getting constant calls, I'm sure all law enforcement [was], is it safe to drive on 96?"
Casteel's family and attorney left court without saying a word, but people throughout Michigan are hoping that in the end the verdict will speak for itself.
"This is probably an easier charge to prove than just the... run of the mill attempted murder. Terrorism here is right," said Fox 2 legal analyst Charlie Langton.
