DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

They're good at capturing the bad guys, but U.S. Border Patrol agents could not snag a fast-moving canine. Now, the dog is on the lamb and its owners are desperate for the animal's safe return.

The Wilken family had just cleared customs from Canada into the US when their dog Ash managed to get out of her cage, escape from an agent, and take off running. It happened at the Ambassador Bridge Friday afternoon. The 20 pound Pug-Jack Russell mix got loose from an agent. We talked to her owner by phone from Atlanta.

"I didn't see what happened with the officers and the dog," Niels Wilcken told Fox 2. "I just saw the guy chasing the dog, and by the cage, I saw the leash attached to the collar."

The fast moving dog took off without his collar. Now, he has no ID. Border Patrol agents searched the area but came up empty handed. The family also took part in the search.

"My son wanted to keep watching for the dog and looking for her," Wilcken said. "We spent four more hours going all over the place."

With darkness setting in, the family gave up their search and traveled on to Atlanta. Back in Detroit, the hunt for Ash continues. The Wilken family and especially 9 year old Joseph hopes when their vacation ends and they return to Canada, Ash will be back at the bridge waiting to greet them.
