CORDOVA, Tenn. (FOX13) -

During Friday's funeral at Hope Presbyterian Church for Memphis Police Officer Martoiya Lang, Mayor A C Wharton received a phone call from The White House and Vice President Joe Biden.

The White House called the mayor to join in a conference call with Mr. Biden and a small group of mayors across the country to discuss the issue of gun violence.

Mayor Wharton excused himself and joined in on the conference call at the church pastor's office, the mayor's office said.

Mayoral spokesman Bobby White said The White House conference call was "very open, very candid, and unscripted."

Mayor Wharton joined in the call that included mayors from Philadelphia, Aurora, Colo., and a mayor in Connecticut close to the Dec. 14 Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy.

Mayor Wharton wasn't able to ask a question or talk to Mr. Biden, White said.

"Officer Lang is dead today because a guy used a stolen gun with a 16 round magazine clip, our officers don't carry that," said Wharton after the call.

He went on to say that he hopes the good that will come out of Officer Lang's death will be meaningful and effective gun control laws.
