DA Weirich handles Campbell's arraignment

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Treveno Campbell, the 21-year-old accused of shooting and killing Memphis police officer Martoiya Lang Dec. 14, made his first appearance in court Thursday.

Campbell is still at The MED recovering from wounds he sustained when police returned fire. He appeared in Shelby County General Sessions Court in front of Judge Bill Anderson via video feed from the hospital prison ward.

County District Attorney Amy Weirich personally handled the procedure.  She vowed to take a personal hand in the prosecution of Campbell.

"The message is that we take this case very seriously, as we do all homicides in this office," DA Weirich said. "It's one that I'm going to handle with Jennifer Nichols in our office."

The packed courtroom fell silent to listen to the proceedings.

It was her prosecutorial skills in a courtroom that made DA Weirich a successful and feared adversary for many Memphis defense attorneys as an assistant district attorney.

Now as the boss of the office Weirich vows she's ready to jump back into the judicial ring if it means putting a police officer's accused killer off the streets forever.

Nichols is considered a strong prosecutor as well. This year she led the prosecution team that convicted child murderer Shakara Dickens.

"You have no bond set. There will be no bond set," Judge Anderson said to a wheelchair-bound Campbell.

Campbell has been charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder in the death of Officer Lang, a nine-year veteran of Memphis police and a mother of four. The murder suspect also wounded her partner, Officer William Vrooman, in the leg as they were serving a narcotics warrant at a house on Mendenhall Cove in Berclair.

Campbell's defense attorney William Massey was also present during his client's video arraignment.

Asked if he had a gun permit, Campbell said he said "no" to Judge Anderson. The murder suspect used  a 9mm pistol.

Campbell is scheduled to be back in front of Judge Anderson on Jan. 3, 2013 in General Sessions Courtroom 11.

"I want to investigate their allegations in order to complete discovery and I want to conduct my own investigation," Massey said after the arraignment of his client. "That's where we are in this case now. We're just beginning our own investigation."

For a determined DA Weirich the case presents the opportunity to turn up the spotlight on the shadowy figures who perpetrate gun crimes in Shelby County.

"We do take these very seriously and our office will make sure that justice is done, for Officer Lang and all the others," she said.

Officer Lang's funeral is Friday at 11 a.m. at Hope Presbyterian on Walnut Grove in Cordova, with internment to follow at Southwoods Memorial Park Cemetery.
