Mayor Luttrell has requested a county wide moment of silence on Friday morning at 8:30am.
"It has been a tragic week across our nation and also here in Shelby County. Memphis Police Officer, Martoiya Lang, died in the line of duty while serving a drug warrant in East Memphis. Her partner, Officer William Vrooman, was also shot but is recovering from his injuries. As we know, 20 children and six adults also died at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
It's fitting that we take a moment to remember the families and friends of those affected by these tragedies. This Friday morning at 8:30, wherever you may work throughout Shelby County Government, simply pause and say a prayer. When events of this magnitude occur, distance and town borders don't exist. We are all neighbors to each other. Having a specific time for a moment of silence will help me, as it may you, to remember the victims, some who have connections to Shelby County."
He also reminded that if you would like to write and expression of of sympathy to the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting you can visit Forest Hill funeral homes throughout Shelby County.
Additionally, Forest Hill Funeral home at 2440 Whitten Road will hold a brief service of remembrance this Friday night, December 21st, at 5:30 p.m.
