Ethics panel forms amid Pickler accusations

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

An ethics panel has been formed in the wake of scanDALOUS accusations from Shelby County School Board member Martavius Jones into longtime board member David Pickler.

During Tuesday evening's school board meeting, Jones claimed Pickler personally benefited financially from board business without disclosing it.

He says Pickler's wealth management firm is the advisor on record for a $12 million investment into a trust fund called Gas-B 45.

Jones claims the payout on the deal is $75,000 initially with a $30,000 payout ongoing. Jones wanted the board to vote on Pickler's resignation but that was voted down.

Instead commissioners voted to form an ethics committee to work with the general counsels to investigate the claims.

This committee will stay intact to investigate any ethical question that comes on from this point forward.

Commissioners said that is the best way to go about internal accusations and ethical questions.

"Commissioner Pickler, I want to give an apology to the board," Board member Kevin Woods said Tuesday. "If you're guilty of all these charges, I wish it would come through a committee and properly vetted by our attorney. I would hate this to happen to me."

Pickler has not made a comment on the accusations.

This board was just put together Tuesday evening, so no meetings have been scheduled yet. The panel made up of Commissioners Reeves, Love, and Theresa Jones will do an investigation together with the attorneys. They will bring their findings back to the school board, and the board will take action at that time if it's needed.
