MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Tiger quarterback has given of his time in many ways University of Memphis junior quarterback Jacob Karam is one of 12 Conference USA student-athletes that will receive the C-USA Fall Spirit of Service Award, conference commissioner Britton Banowsky announced on Wednesday.

The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designed to recognize community service efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. The Spirit of Service award is presented three times throughout the season with Wednesday's honorees representing Conference USA's fall sports - football, soccer, volleyball and cross country.

While University of Memphis student-athletes are involved in many community service projects through the athletic department's Life Skills office, Karam has given of his time in efforts which have extended beyond the opportunities coordinated by the department.

Earlier this month, Karam played piano during a St. Jude Children's Research Hospital outing for its patients to Wolfchase Galleria Mall. He said the most rewarding part of the event was having children come up and tell him their favorite song and then he would accompany them on piano while they sang into a microphone.

Karam has also volunteered at Target House, organized a tour of St. Jude's for his teammates, regularly played piano at the Catholic Student Center and served as a reader at the U of M's Campus School. He was also involved in several community service activities organized or coordinated through the U of M's Life Skills office during the past months.

A Conference USA All-Academic Football Team selection, Karam transferred to the University of Memphis from Texas Tech where he graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in university studies with concentrations in communication studies, legal studies and political science in December, 2011.

Karam helped the Tigers win more games in 2012 than the last two years combined and post the program's most C-USA wins since 2008.

For the year, the Friendswood, Texas, native completed 176-of-274 passes for 1,895 yards and 14 touchdowns. He set a Memphis single-season record by completing 64.2 percent of his passes while his season totals for completions and touchdowns ranked among the Top 10 in program history.

Karam closed out the 2012 season by completing 40-of-52 passes (76.9 percent) for 579 yards and seven touchdowns during the team's final three games of the season.
