When Memphis police Officer Martoiya Lang was killed in the line of duty Friday morning, four little girls lost their mother.
While nothing can be done to bring her back, the Memphis Police Department hosted a fundraiser Monday at Wolfchase Galleria in Germantown.
The money collected from Monday's fundraiser will go to her four children, ages 2, 12, 13, and 14.
With a family photo on the front of the collection buckets, volunteers began collecting money for The Officer Lang Memorial Fund. The picture of what was obviously a happy family of four little girls and a hard working mom brought home the fact that they have lost their mom; and nothing can change that.
But they will need help moving on with their lives and the people of Memphis once again stepped up.
"The city is full of good people anyway," said Memphis police officer J. Denison. "They just want to help. As it is, you do have a select bad few. In general we do have is good citizens of quality here."
Mostly it was $5s, $10s and $20s but Shelbra Hatkins had one lady stop by that she said had wings.
"I had an angel stop by she stopped right here and asked me if she could write a check," she said.
"I said sure, make it out to the Memphis Police Association. She handed me the check and said God bless. I looked at the check and it was for $200, and it brought tears to my eyes."
