The web site GAWKER posted an article written by Liza Long, who shares her experience in raising a child with mental illness.
She says her son is given to fits of rage and can at times be dangerous.
In the piece she writes: "No one wants to send a 13-year-old genius who loves Harry Potter and his snuggle animal collection to jail. But our society, with its stigma on mental illness and its broken healthcare system, does not provide us with other options."
I recommend reading this article to gain a unique perspective on the terrible tragedy at Sandy Hook School in Connecticut.
Liza long is an author, musician, and erstwhile classicist. she is also a single mother of four bright, loved children, one of whom has special needs.
